women’s role in the civil war
The protracted conflict of the civil war opened opportunities for women when the men
left for war. There were industrial jobs such as shoe making and clothing and
government jobs and most women posed as men soldiers to stay close to their
sweethearts. The first female physician in the civil war, helped organized the U. S. Sanitary Commission to assist the union armies in the field. The Commission trained
nurses, collected medical supplies and equipped hospitals, this helped women
acquire the organizational skills and the self-confidence to propel women’s
movement forward after war.Sally Tompkins ran a Richmond infirmary for wounded Confederate soldiers. Then women held a Chicago Sanitary Fair, the fair captured confederate flags, battle relics, handicrafts like potholders and Edonate items, including president Lincoln’s original draft of the emanicipation Proclaimation. This was to raise funds for soldier relief efforts.
Then from the years of 1865(1863)-1877 their was the reconstruction era where women such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony two feminist leaders, who during this time gave up their demands to help the blacks with there's. And shortly after that the thirdteenth and fourthteenth amendment was passed. So the two feminist leaders were back on their own mission to add sex to the list of voting rights and to this day women are free to vote thanks to the women of this era.
The industrial and progressive(1870-1917) these movements came where women were able to join organizations such as the knights of labors who preached tolerance and the solidarity of all working men and women, but not the Irish and Chinese. The progressive era was slightly different during this era there was one specific women who stood out and her name was Ida M. Tarbell a women, who was one of the most respected in the business historians of her time. She did this by publishing a scathing history of the Standard Oil Company and later joining the muckrakers in purchasing the American magazine.
So thanks to all these women during these eras men finally take women seriously, we are able to vote, publish our own magizines, joined male organizations and let our voices be heard and won't let anything stop us thanks to these women. So hopefully you learned a little more and won't forget it,happy studying.
